The largest Sikh gurdwara in London, opened in 2003 with a capacity of over 3,000, and the setting for a great many Anand Karaj ceremonies each year. Photographing an Anand Karaj well is mostly about knowing when not to raise the camera.

Darbar hall etiquette
Heads covered, shoes off, no shoes or camera bags where they do not belong, and never a position higher than or in front of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. We work from the sides at a respectful distance through the kirtan and the laavan.
No flash during the laavan
The four laavan are the heart of the ceremony. We shoot them on available light with fast lenses. A flash firing through a laav is both disruptive and, frankly, a sign the photographer has not done this before.
The stained glass
The stained glass and architectural detail make this one of the better gurdwaras in London for portraits immediately after the ceremony, without needing to travel to a second location.
Scale and crowding
With a hall this size and often several hundred guests, the langar hall and the exits get congested. We plan family group shots for a specific window and a specific spot so they do not dissolve into the crowd.

Common questions
Do you understand gurdwara protocol?
Yes. We cover our heads, remove footwear, stay out of the sangat's sightlines and never position ourselves above or in front of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The etiquette is not a constraint on the photography — it is part of doing it properly.
Will you use flash inside the darbar hall?
No, not during the ceremony. Available light only.
Do you photograph the milni and the baraat arrival?
Yes — coverage usually starts well before the ceremony with preparation, the arrival and the milni, and continues through to the doli.
